Going to a job interview makes many people nervous. If you are going on your first job interview or maybe just your first job interview in the retail industry, you may feel your stomach churning a little. Before heading out the door blindly, here are a few tips on how to ace your retail interview so you can land that job.

Dress Nicely, but Don’t Go Overboard
If you are applying for an upper level management position, wearing a typical business suit is the best option. If you are applying for an entry level position as a cashier or box stocker on the other hand, you don’t want to over dress for the part.
It is likely that the person interviewing you for the job may be the manager or assistant manager of the store who may be wearing the store uniform. You showing up to the mall in a designer suit will just look awkward and may make the interviewer feel like you are trying too hard. Wear something nice such as khaki pants, a polo shirt and dress shoes. This way you look clean and neat without going overboard. Be sure not to dress like a slob. Wearing ripped jeans and a tee is never appropriate even if you are trying to work in a hip and trendy store.
Be Flexible About Hours
One important question the interviewer usually asks during a retail interview is “Are you willing to work nights and weekends?” You need to be prepared to answer “yes” to this question. Saying no will most likely cost you the job. Most retail shops have their busiest hours on nights and weekends and that is when they need the most help. If you are applying for a part-time position, the store will likely need you the most during these times. That being said, some exceptions can be made. If you are a college student and you have class on Tuesday nights, don’t blow your education over a part-time job. Be honest with the person interviewing you and let them know that you are a student and on Tuesday nights you have a class, but that you would be happy to work any other night of the week. Most managers are happy to work with you around your school schedule.
Answer Honestly
Don’t make up experience just to make your application look better. If you have never worked a register before, don’t lie about it. It will be obvious when you begin the job that you don’t know what you are doing. Most retail managers are willing to train as long as you are willing to work.
If you are a high school student that has never worked before, don’t sell yourself short. Everyone has to have a first job and retail can be a great place to start. Show the hiring manager you are responsible by telling him or her about your good grades or about leadership positions that you hold on school clubs or sports teams.
