If your life is chaotic, it is probably hard to find time to work out. Between work, kids, socializing and errands life can be exhausting. Taking a job in retail gives you the opportunity to burn calories while getting paid. As a retail worker you are on your feet a lot so that already gives you the chance to burn more calories than someone who has a desk job and is sedentary most of the day. Daily tasks such as bagging items or rearranging shelves can help you to stay fit. Granted, it is not as good of a work out as hitting the treadmill, but it definitely beats not moving at all. Another great way to burn extra calories while working in retail is to volunteer to unload the stock truck. Depending on the type of store you work in, the items can be as heavy, if not heavier than the weights you would use at a gym. If the retail establishment you are part of has carts, take a turn rounding up the shopping carts in the parking lot to shed additional pounds.

If you are of high school or college age and are looking for a job, at first you may think that working in retail has to be a nightmare due to horror stories you have heard from others. While working in retail has many ups and downs just as any job does, there are actually several reasons why a retail job can be a perfect fit for a young person like you. The Hours As a student you are likely in class most of the day and will need a job that you can do in the evening. The hiring manager may be happy to have found someone to work the 5pm-close shift which is harder to fill than the day shift. If you are in college and have a schedule that varies from day to day, retail managers are typically very flexible, especially if you explain that you are a full-time student. Work around your classes instead of having to schedule classes around your job.

Are you looking for a job in retail? Home Depot, the household repair giant, plans to hire around 70,000 workers this spring. While some retail businesses such as toy stores and clothing stores need the most seasonal staff near the holidays, stores like Home Depot get busy in the spring season when many people like to begin their household improvement projects. The store will need both full-time and part-time workers. Jobs may range from cashiers, to help on the floor to sales assistance in a specific department. If you are in need of a job, don’t be afraid to submit your resume even if you don’t have experience working in home improvement. If you have past cashier experience in other industries, you will likely be able to learn the Home Depot cashiers in no time. Even if you have no retail experience at all, if you have worked in other kinds of sales there may be a spot for you. The garden department and lumbar department also need workers who are able to help customers transport heavy objects.

Ace Your Retail Job Interview

Going to a job interview makes many people nervous. If you are going on your first job interview or maybe just your first job interview in the retail industry, you may feel your stomach churning a little. Before heading out the door blindly, here are a few tips on how to ace your retail interview so you can land that job. Dress Nicely, but Don’t Go Overboard If you are applying for an upper level management position, wearing a typical business suit is the best option. If you are applying for an entry level position as a cashier or box stocker on the other hand, you don’t want to over dress for the part. It is likely that the person interviewing you for the job may be the manager or assistant manager of the store who may be wearing the store uniform. You showing up to the mall in a designer suit will just look awkward and may make the interviewer feel like you are trying too hard. Wear something nice such as khaki pants, a polo shirt and dress shoes. This way you look clean and neat without going overboard. Be sure not to dress like a slob. Wearing ripped jeans and a tee is never appropriate even if you are trying to work in a hip and trendy store.

Be Nice to Retail Workers on Christmas Eve

Make sure that you are nice to retail workers on Christmas Eve. You should be nice to retail workers all of the time, but go out of your way to be extra nice this December 24th. Think about how busy of a day Christmas Eve is for you. Would you really want to behind a register with tons of screaming and whining customers? A lot of times retail workers take the brunt of people’s anger for other things. If company policy won’t let a customer make a return, the big players of the company making $250,000 a year or more never have to suffer the customer’s anger---but the retail workers often making low wages do. I made the mistake of working in a toy store on Christmas Eve one year. Saying it now it sounds like a mistake from the beginning, but at the time it seemed like an okay idea. I was in college and had worked at the toy store the previous summer. I really got along with the manager and assistant manager well, so I figured why not put in some hours there over winter break to make some extra spending money for my spring semester. I was already trained so there would be no learning curve.
